Engine Knocking
89 300E
Car has always run on 91 octane gas, but when I accelerate hard on a freeway ramp, I get all sorts of knocking until I back off the pedal. Plugs looks good and clean, but knocking still there. I did try a bottle of octane boost once and it seems to help in both throttle response and the knocking. Any ideas how I can reduce or eliminate the knocking without putting in bottles of magic elixer? thanks. |

Sounds like it's time to de-carbon the engine.
Do a search under " seafoam ". ![]()

Interesting.
I've heard of seafoam and I believe it is similar to Ventil Sauber? Put it into the tank or to hot soak?
Have not heard of Xylene as a cleaner. Also put it into the tank? How much per gallon of gas or also a hot soak solvent. |

I normally use 2-5% in the gas....

Seafoam works best on the intake system when introduced via the intake vacuum hose.
The knocking might also be the result of ignition timing being off, due to wear at the rotor/dist cap, spark plug, EZL unit. |

For a 20 gallon tank, you are additing .5 to a full gallon? Helping with the pinging? I believe it adds to the octane but any issues with the rubber parts the fuel passes through?

I changed the rotor and cap a little while ago along with the plugs. Can't do much with the timing, can I?
