I am trying to troubleshoot the a/c system. I think the compressor siezed up and the belt came off.I have noticed that the compressor pulley is very rough if one tries to spin it.with the belt removed should it spin nice and free or should there be some friction until the compressor is engaged? This car also has no Aux fan in front of the radiator is this a change by Mercedes or was it just removed by the previous owner? This is a 1983 300D Turbo.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news
but you more than likely have a bad compressor but the bad part is you will want an aux fan on there if you get it where the a/c works.
