M117 Oil Pressure

Ok, This isn't the typical newbie question of oil pressure before you all turn off and look at a different thread!

I've recently been having problems with what I thought to be the oil pressure sender or the gauge in the cluster.

I'd have full pegged oil pressure gauge when cold, but as the engine got warm, the gauge would drop slightly down to just over 2 bar when I was driving ie not at idle.
Strange thing was that the oil pressure would shoot up from 2 or so and peg as soon as I hit about 2600 rpm.

I suspected the sender. Changed it out with a new one with no change.
I had a spare cluster, again changed it out with no change.
Starting to suspect my bearings were on the way out, I thought what the hell and pulled the oil filter. It literally fell apart in my hands.
I didnt have any fresh oil, so just put in a new filter and bingo! Oil pressure how it should be again.
The rapid rise of the gauge at 2600 must have been the filter bypass opening.
Strange thing is that I only changed the oil and filter about 8 months / 3000 ago with a top quality 5w50 synthetic and a MANN filter.

I did change the engine with one with unknown history at the same time, so maybe the PO wasn't too keen on keeping the maintenence up to date, sludge accumulated and my good synthetic oil dislodged it and clogged the filter?

Anyway, first thing tomorrow i'll be off out getting a couple of new filters and a 5 gallon drum of oil.
