95 S320 not heating lower part of the car

I took a drive in my S320 the other day, (it was -17C acording to the outside temp gauge), and the heat would go down toward my feet. As well the rest of the car didn't seem very warm. When I turned the defrost on, it was warmer, but still not at the 23C that I set the CCu at. Does anyone have any ideas where to start looking to remedy this problem??

Did you mean that the heat would NOT go down to your feet? The system is in full auto mode?

Yes, the heat would NOT go down to my feet on any of auto, down or bilevel modes.

So, where does the air come out? and does it change at all when you press bi level/defrost? The is an air handler behind the glove box that is in charge of applying vacuum to the various vacuum pods.. Im not sure if your year has it but my 99 S320 has some diagnostics built into the Climate Control Unit. Mine was blowing only to the defrost sometimes and it turned out to be a loose connection to the vacuum manifold behind the glove box. There was actually a code set in the ccu that said just that..

When it is set to the lower vents, the air just kind of seeps, and doesn't really blow, although the blower is going full tilt. When I turn the bilevel on, it comes out the front vents. Defrost comes out the top and sides.

I have several codes. They are:
E110
E100
E045
E087

As well as two that don't make any sense to me:
D110
D087

I checked the vaccuum behind the glovebox, and pushed all the vaccuum lines in harder. I checked all the codes, and nothing is comming up. Is there any other things to check?? I have no idea where else to look. Any ideas??

Assuming you looked at http://pages.prodigy.net/jforgione/MB_AAC.html

you can run a flap test
http://www.continentalimports.com/ser_ic40142.html
for the older push button systems it's hold in the REST and 0C/OF button for > 5 seconds.
The chart (chart2) at continentalimports at doesn't quite match the older cars. However step 12 is left footwell long stroke (closed/open leak air) 13 is left footwell leak air, open, 14 is right footwell closed/open leak air, 15 is right footwell open leak air, open

so there are three settings closed, leak air (short stroke), open (long stroke)

The D means you are in the mode where it is offering to Erase/Delete the codes from memory. Pressing the right auto button will zap it.

I did the flap test, and there was no air still comming into the footwells on either high or low settings. The vaccuum distribution block behind the glovebox makes the sounds that things normally do when it should be working. A thump, a hiss, and another thump. Like what an air ram makes except a lot quieter. I paid a lot of attention to where the airwas going. It seemed that it was always going out the side vents. What should I test next?

Also, I cleared the codes and pulled the relays mentioned. I still have two codes.
E103
E107

Those don't seem to have anything to do with my problem. They are for the aux fan.

I still dont' have any air comming to the foowwells. Any ideas what to try next?? I'm planning on buying a vaccuum tester today to check the vaccuum connectors.

Sounds like testing with the vacuum testing is your next step. Check to see if the vacuum distributor is doing the proper thing for your lower flaps, and if the vaccum pods on those flaps are actually working.

My thoughts exactly.. If you have a mightyvac use is to test all the pods.. Remove the lines at the vacuum distributor and pull a vacuum on each of them.. Should be no leaks.

Bill.

I have done some vacuum testing. I tested line 5 and 13 from the vacuum distribution block in the passenger footwell. I pulled a vacuum on #5 and turned on the key, switched to the footwell heater, and the air started blowing from there. I pulled off line #13 to check the vacuum resivour. No leaks there either. #7 pulling from the block took a while to get a vacuum, but it seemed to hold. What would be the next test? Where does the vacuum come from for these operations?? Off the engine?? If so, where on the engine??

Also if it helps, but I'm not sure it's connected, the transmission shifts a bit hard. Like on my 300 SDL when the vacuum line came unplugged.

If anyone is interested, the vacuum line came off on the engine manifold. Extremely simple problem.
