Can I change the Neutral Safety Switch?

I was told the Neutral Safety switch on my 89 420 is going bad. The engine will not start if I'm in Park since last week, but it will start when I put the stick in Neutral. I'm worried I'll lose Neutral also, and I'll be stuck way from home, and towing cost down here in South Louisiana are about $125 now.

Is the Neutral Safety Switch easy to get to or is it a dealer replace item. You know there is not enough clearance under the 420 to crawl under and this boy is 220lbs and 60 years old. IS it accessable under the car or can it be reached under the console to replace?

I have the Mercedes Repair CD but I can't find anything about this switch.

It's a reasonable DIY job, just very tight quarters. You need to get 2 wheels safely off the ground and you'll need quarter inch drive rachet/sockets. There's also a bit of trick to getting the new one aligned properly. Try a search - lots of information in the files.

Very easy with a lift..
If you are not handy at tight quarters , pay someone..it takes less than an hour.
