Rear Differential Oil Burned

Hi ,
happy new year to everyone from Alberto and my CLK 430
I decided to change the differential oil after 100.000 km , and with my big surprise it was dark and the smell was like burned......
I replaced the oil with MB 001 989 17 03 10
plese can someon tell me if this oil is the correct one or if I have to use other may be like syntetic?
many thanks guys.
Alberto

That is the correct fluid. Most synthetics will as well!

It sounds like overheating. That would be very unusual in normal driving. Was there any evidence of an oil leak?

Did you measure how much oil was drained?

How much oil did you fill it with?

One way to burn diff lube is to run different sized tires on the rear wheels. On a car this new, I am not sure this would work with the electronic stability controls that I imagine this car has.

Great lateral thinking Tom!

Perhaps it had been running with the spare wheel, a smaller size, too fast and for too long?

My C36 Owners Manual warns about not exceeding 80 km/h with the spare on the rear axle.

Tires are the same size... no noise from the diff... are you sure the smell isn't just the usual stink from diff oil? After all, these gear lubes are often loaded with sulfur EP additives.

Drained oil of 1.4 litres sounds about perfect.

But, did you own the car from new? Perhaps the previous owner...?

Is your spare tyre a different size from your rear tyre size?

My spare is 225/45/17 and my stock rears are 245/40/17. The spare rotates at 807.6 revoultions per mile and the stock rotates at 815.97 revolutions per mile. Now you wouldn't think that would make much difference. But, my owners manual and decals plastered on my car WARN me not to exceed 80 km/h with the spare on the rear axle (BTW, the spare is identical to the stock fronts).

Perhaps you had different inflation pressures on the stock rears due to a slow leak at some time when you were driving fast for a sustained period? (Blame your wife LOL!).

PS. I just drained the diff on my C36 (157,000 km) about two weeks back. I am not sure if it has ever been changed since new. It smelt great and the oil looked really good. So if your diff oil smelt burnt, it probably was burnt.
