Question W124 steering wheel dismantle

I have a 300E and was wondering if i can remove the air bag from the wheel and discard it, so as to retain the stock wheel?

airbag removal

The airbag is held by two torx screws on to the steering wheel they are accessed from the back of the wheel. There are electrical wires between the airbag and the steering wheel that need to be disconected.I would be VERY CAREFUL in removing an airbag.

Disconnect the battery negative first, then the red plug connecting the airbag to the wiring harness, probably down under the driver side dash near the cruise control box. Remove the torx screws, then unplug the airbag unit. Mercedes recommends storing in a secure place, face up (plug side down)....all this from the service manual for my 560SL. I don't know anything about modifying the horn/molded black plastic facia to go back on the car without the airbag though...or maybe you are just going to disable the airbag by unplugging it?

I have heard that static electricty can set them off, I'd hate to be in the middle of a 60 mph drift and have some static blow an airbag in my face. It might hurt a bit. Ha Ha

How does one disable the SRS light if the airbag is removed? Is it just a matter of pulling the bulb out of the bulb holder?
