Ign-sw--no Start

HI I have a problem or maybe two problems--my 1985--300D--will
not start with the key--It was like this when I got the car . I can start
car by jumpering terminal 1 to 3 on connection block and it will run all
day like that---as long as key is in run position # 3 I tried to fix problem
and I pulled --KEY--TUMBLER--AND BLACK RING--out of switch-
--my first question is should key turn all the way to position #-4--
which is start position I assume??--while I am holding it in my hand or not
---Then my next question is the part of switch still in the car has two indenttations in it That appear to be turned by tumbler assembly two tits
sticking out shoul I be able turn the part in car to position--1-----2-------3--
and then to position #--4--and start car also in what position is steering
unlocked and how ????---also which assembly has spring in it to return
key to run position after being in start position????------I noticed they is
someone on this site that has sent drawings to people that are to big
for this site---I think name is---RASLAJE--or something like that I would
appreciate a wiring diagram of ignition switch and maybe what fuses or
relays that wires go to---so I can troubleshoot problem from switch by looking at wires under hood or fuse block---any help is greatly appreciated
thanks again for help this is a great site I will be able to help others
once I get accustomed to this car----

I don't know the answer to your questions. The best way to search this forum is after you click 'Search' use the 'Google Search' box that appears.

The electrical portion of the ignition switch steering lock is what spring loads the key position to return to the #2 position (number 3 position if you include off as position 1)
