some more of the awesome car of awesomeness
|
I love the early style valve covers... and that's a slick ride.
Needs the 5.6L dual intake snorkel and TriYs :D |
Looks like a great project car. Congrats!
|
I glad someone close grabbed that one. Had I been near I certainly would have.
Good Job! I think the guy didn't know what he had...Right? |
Congratulations, John. I'm jealous! I think you have too many SECs . . .Oh wait, that would be impossible to have too many. I can't wait to see it in person.
|
Sweet ride! By far though, the most awesome of the awesomest are those pimpin' cookie monster skin seat covers! :D :P
Kidding aside, that is one nice find - congrats! |
Yeah, the seat covers HAVE to go! What's underneath them? I'm assuming it's not pretty, not if someone put something THAT bad-looking over them.
|
Seats underneath are just about perfect. Interior is in excellent shape aside for a few splits in the dash.
Seriously now I may sell the 380SEC. Still kicking the idea around, anyone have any interest? |
nice, had a chance to own one of those, passed it up because the guy wanted too much, but always loved the looks, I probably shoulda bought it just like the
68 T Bird:rolleyes: 63 Falcon:rolleyes: 72 300:rolleyes: |
Congrats, that is one sweet car. :D
|
anyone know what the markings on the back of the cams mean? All I can make out is a "M" and what looks to be a "09"?
Also car still has the factory fire extinguisher, plus some kind of orthopedic seats? I've never seen ones like it before, hand pumps inbetween the seats on each side. Can anyone run the VIN on the Russian site? WDB1260441A036264 |
Is it good...
..to let us congregate?
Perhaps isolation therapy;. no Craig's List access or forums, etc...:D I just need time to work on everything I already have sitting around. I went to the Houston GTG the other day - WAY embarrassed at how dirty and "out of shape" my 500 was... Had a good time anyway - had to slyly close my hood when the others weren't looking though - between Paul's 300SL and an Austin MB Club member's (Lee?) 500SL I was tucking my tail. I AM going to latch on to an SEC one of these days... couch at night be damned. Regards, Kevin P.S.: Nice find - do us a favor here and post lots of pictures of the new SEC resurrection |

ohhh.. its black on black... I need that car
can I buy it??? Pleaasseee I Get my bonus next month and tax money next weeeekkkk!!!! It screams TheDon! |
D**N! That's going to clean up fine. Any AMG stickers on the door jambs or radiator mount? NICE RIDE. And to you GOOD RIDE COWBOY!
That exhaust "Y" pipe is 180 degrees out of phase of the 380 Euro Logs and "Y" Pipe I just bought in NJ....Wonder if that is a NE US thing. Being mine crossed over from drivers side to passenger side with almost the same set up, but went into a 2 into 1 collector. Mine has an EGR on the driver's side log, and the driver's side down tube turned under the car to join the passenger side at the collector, the O2 Sensor was mounted just above the bend going into the collector, Passenger side down tube just dropped down, 90'd and went to the collector. My "Y" pipe was cobbled up too, so I just had the seller cut the passenger side off at the collector and the drivers side cut off just above the first bend. My muffler guy can do the rest. |
Yeah I'm not sure what dto do with the exhaust yet. It's gotta be restricted, the narrowest point is a 1 3/4" pipe. Thats what both sides go down into...
What I haven't been able to get a definitive answer about is whether or not the Euro 500 came with an idle air valve and other stuff, I was surprised to see an EGR valve on it. my euro 380 doesn't have either piece. What did they come with before the DOT got ahold of it? |
12 steps
hay john, nice ride. the first thing i would do is dump the seats. since there is a rumor circulating that you don't have room in the garage to store them, I'll reluctantly volunteer to take them off your hands. from the looks of the under-side, it appears the mileage may be true. what a beautiful"diamond in the rough"
|
ahh a little search on google rendered what I was looking for:

My 1984 US ,CA, Spec'd 380SE doesn't have an EGR either. Hope I can ditch the one on the Euro Log too. Smog test sheet where EGR is listed says N/A. I do have the Smog air pump though.
What I'd like to do is pipe the down pipes to a crossover then to a dual in and out high flow cat straight to a Magnaflow (or equivalent) dual in and out muffler..with or without resonators. I would put the bung for the O2 sensor in the junction of the crossover. John, Next time use the Russian MB club website to run your VIN. http://old.mbclub.ru/mb/vin/?lng=eng |
That is a nice car. It will clean up VERY well.
You might ask on Benzworld W126 about the exhaust, start a thread. (I am a Moderator there). There are some REAL W126 exhaust system experts over there. You will get some good ideas from them. |
maaaan you've got me looking locally for a nice 420SEL.. again...
|
Ahhh.... The early orthopedic seats....
Gotta love those optioned cars. |
I got a little bored with the black AMG wheels that I had on it so I put these on:
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y15...uro/IMG004.jpg 19" Carlsson wheels with 235/40/19 in front and 265/35/19 in rear. Much better :) |
Dyno day results!
I finally got my 1-bump front spring pads on it the other night and now the front end is at a height I like.
Today we had our DIY day with the local MBCA group and I went along to help out and get the 500SEC dynoed. Specs I was taking as official were these: 500SE/SEL/SEC 4,973cc, 96.5 x 85mm, V8-cyl OHC, type M117, Bosch fuel injection, 240bhp at 4,750rpm; 296.6lb.ft at 3,200 rpm (to spring 1981). 231bhp at 4,750rpm; 298lb.ft at 3,000rpm (from spring 1981 to October 1985). 245bhp at 4,750rpm; 286lb.ft at 3,750rpm (from October 1985). 184bhp at 4,500rpm; 247lb.ft at 2,000 rpm (US models). 168.4 HP @ 4250 RPM 257.8 FT/LB @ 1750 RPM Even taking in a 20% drivetrain loss, it's little less then what I was hoping for but nonetheless a good base value to start with before I mess with things :D http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y15...o/IMG001-2.jpg http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y15...o/IMG002-3.jpg http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y15...o/IMG003-1.jpg http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y15...o/IMG004-1.jpg Video: http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y15...h_IMG005-2.jpg |
those are some bad ass wheels
|
NICE :D I love it.
|
Bun of a Sitch you find some nice cars John. Geez!
|
John, I don't know if you have done anything about the exhaust yet but it really put a smile on my face when I ran a single 2 1/2 in pipe front to rear with an old fashion glass pack about the center and a ugly general replacement muffler on the rear. I have never actually checked HP or 0-60 times but I would say the exhaust added probably 20% to 25% HP and torque. The other thing, before the exhaust change, it just ran out of breath at about 4000 RPM but now it is still pulling strong when it hits the red line at 5500 RPM. My car is actually a US car but it has EURO heads, intake, and FI and runs as good as any 560 I have been in.
Paul in NC |
The car idles a little better after tonight, found a nice big vacuum leak off the line to the distributor. There was a T into the line with the T going under the manifold and then to nowhere.
Also replaced the seeping coolant reservoir with a new one. Wow those new bottles are really white. |
Very cool, the car looks great! I've always dug the big coupes.
So what's your eventual plan with this one? |
This one is the keeper and I will sell the one I took on the trip to NC. I guess whatever this one needs, it will get.
|
Awesome. I look forward to seeing its progress.
|
Looks great john. Someday, I'll get a nice car.. someday.

Not a whole lot has been going on with the car lately, it's been at a friends shop all week getting an exhaust made for it. I should be getting it back on monday. The trans grenaded 3rd gear two days before I was going to take it to autocross so that got pulled out and overhauled as well.
After talking with Jonathan when I was in Atlanta last weekend, he put the bug in my head to find 2nd gen brakes for it so I'm starting on that project now too, as well as I still need to replace the brake booster as it leaks. At some point it's going to need paint so i'm starting to look for a good place to take it to for that as well. Here's a pic from about an hour before the trans stopped shifting higher then 2nd gear. I had just put on my track tires and wheels for a trial fit and took it around the neighborhood before heading home for the weekend. |
What a fun night this has been. Just had to have the 500 towed home after bottoming the front end ona dip in the road which knocked the radiator into the fan, destroying both parts. As luck would have it, I have autocross again this sunday and this was the car I was planning on taking!
Going to have to scramble to locate a 126 radiator and fan by tomorrow night!!! :( http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y15...o/img001-3.jpg http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y15...o/img002-4.jpg http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y15...o/img003-2.jpg Also heres some shots of the new exhaust. Not too wild about all the clamps, I may go have it welded sometime soon. I'll try to remember to get some better ones and video next time I have it on the rack. http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y15...o/img004-2.jpg http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y15...o/img005-3.jpg http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y15...o/img006-1.jpg |
Did Andreas make your exhaust, John?

No but I'm probably going to have him weld it for me. |
Well it's all back together and running like it should. I also found a bad wire when washing off the coolant mess and replaced that as well.
Mucho Kudos to my 560SEL that gave its fan blades and brand new radiator for the cause. New parts for it were ordered this morning. |
That SEC seems to be cursed dude!
John,
Will the radiator off Bruno help you? It is brand new... |
Lovely car. I am jealous.
I can see you are having a lot of fun with it too. Congratulations. I suggest turning the muffler clamps to the side so that the ends can't catch things you might need to drive across. If you weld it this won't apply but I never like welding them because the parts never wear out at the same time and its a devil to take off the rear section after its welded! Tom W |
Bring the exhaust by next time you visit your Dad and I'll weld it up for you.
