w210 heater controls: no lights! (and other electrical gremlins)
Hey folks.
I've got 4 electrical gremlins on my 99 e300d, listed by order of importance: -The heater controls don't light up at night. This started (err, stopped) last week and it's a royal PITA. All other dash lights work. How hard is it to change the bulb? -The passenger seat controls are acting wonky. The switch to move the seat forward/backwards will occasionally malfunction and only move the seat FORWARD. Is this likely the switch itself, or a relay? -The driver's side heated seat doesn't work. The backrest warms up, but not the seat bottom. This means I can't drive around feeling like I just had a big, warm pee. Must fix, postehase! -The passenger sideview mirror is getting fetchy. When I use the adjuster, it skips and twitches into position. Does the same when I use the driver memory settings for the seat/mirror. Is it possible to oil it? I'd like to get these fixed soon, before I learn to live with them. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

There are a pair of slots in the bottom of each AUTO button on the climate control pushbutton unit (N22). You use radio keys to extract the unit. The bulb or bulbs are on the bottom and come out with a quarter-turn.
The seats going forward may be the switch or the wiring. It could also be the seat module. Or a bad connection at one of the connectors between them. I think that I would try cleaning and lubricating the switch first. I don't know if there is enough room to unclip the switch from the door panel with the panel in place, as I've never tried. I have no idea about the seat heater, but you probably need a new element. I believe that the element is part of the cushion, meaning that it is expensive. The mirror is probably starting to die somehow. Search for instructions on removing the cover. Perhaps including "LED" in the search string would help; people seem to want to remove the covers to install ones with LED lamps. |

Fix for climate cntrl lighting on W210
I just bought radio keys fro MB and a bulb for the cntrl heead cost 7 bucks total. Stuck the radio keys in and the unit came right out. remove the keys to reinstall. the bulb fits in a plug on the bottom. very easy to change.
My seat does the same thing. I dont know abought a warm pee Imkinda like my ass cold and ny legs and back warm strange contrast. LOL The Pasenger seat switch is dirty, clean and it is good as new. It is a job to removefrom door panel. I found irratic daily use does the same thing. Mirrors dont know but Id guess that the motor's need a electrical lube/claener. good luck |

I sure hope someone chimes in about the seat heater, I also have the same problem - back heats, bottom doesn't. Dealer said I need a new seat at something like $1100-1300, don't really remember because i had no intention of doing it, at least then. Based on some other things, I had the feeling they either didn't really look at it or didn't know what to do, so they just say replace the whole thing. They may be right, I hope not.

The heaterelement in the seatcushion is screwed.
Not sure if this part is available seperately. Check with the dealer.
