84 190d simple a/c question

on my a/c, It is still fitted for r12, and i went to check the pressure with my gauges the other day and the pressure was so high one of the gauges burried the needle and screwed up my gauge set, but the a/c still doesent blow very cold air. I was thinking it was probably a restriction somewhere, mabey the expansion valve?, If so Is There any way to fix it or do I have to replace it..???
