26 mpg...'87 300E, 141k
Took a 450 mile road trip yesterday...all highway at 70-80 mph. Averaged 26 mpg - I'm impressed! Not bad for a 21 year old...engine seemed happiest at around the 75 mph/3500 rpm range.

Interesting. I finally did a decent run in my 1987 300E 3.2; first part of the tank was in town and the second part was on the highway at 78 mph, and I got 20.5 mpg.
If you guys can push mpg up to the low 20s, then maybe I can too. Next week I'll do a highway tank and see where it puts me.

Good gas mileage
That's great mileage. I've had similar experience. During this winter, my '86 300E has been getting 19 to 22 mpg in mostly town driving. This las Saturday I took a trip to the Oregon coast, mostly 55-65 mph over the coastal mountains. Lots of speed-ups and slows-downs. We got between 26 and 27 mpg.
![]() We've gotten similar mileage before on highway trips and generally do about 22 in town except in the winter. I feel that is pretty good for the type of fuel system these cars have. It's interesting that, in the Saturday paper, the auto review was for the PT Cruiser. That car had an EPA rating for gas mileage which was poorer than I've been getting with my 300E. I'll lay money on the PT Cruiser NOT having nearly as nice a ride as my 300E. ![]()

In 100% highway driving, from my house in So. Cal. to Las Vegas (250 miles one way), I got 26 mpg.

Mileage in 96 E320 24 Valve
I have a 1996 3.2 L 24V with 158K on the clock one head gasket and guide seals at 78K due to leak (still leaks).
I consistantly get 19- 20 in town and 24-25 on the highway at 80 MPH 89 Octane AC on. When the oil gets dirty at 6-8K miles (Syn of course) it drops 2 Mpg hwy and 3 city. I gets very consistant results with this car. Its amazing after that amount of mileage it still posts MFG spec gas mileage. I did a 600 mile trip in july@ 65 MPH and got 28 MPG. the car felt limp at that speed though and felt like it wanted more air. |
