1980 500SE wont run?
 

I picked up a 1980 500SE for free from a friend. It's a one owner car with 80K miles. Here's the problem, it won't run and we can't figure out why.

If gas is poured into the carb, then the car runs like a dream. We figure it might need a new fuel pump or filter. Anyone have any ideas on what it could be?

Obviously by now you have disconnected the fuel line from the carb and know whether it needs a fuel pump or not.

It's a Different animal but my 66 Jeepster would start with starter fluid or fuel into the carb not not otherwise.....Carb rebuilt and it runs like a charm.

So rebuild the carb?

WELLLLLLL, this car doesn't have a carb. It is an SE, the E stands for injection.

You should check the operation of the fuel pump relay and the switching mechanism...I would take off both of the wires from the fuel pump and put power to it. If the car runs, you have a problem in the fuel pump controll circuit.

No carb huh? I had a feeling this guy might not know what he's talking about. I saw the car once, and I haven't looked at the engine yet. Ooh I feel like a dummy. Anyways... I will try what you said. I'll keep you updated...

He said carb, who am I to argue. The Jeepster has a carb of that I am sure.:confused:
