97 c230 w202 steering & wiper woes

I have owned a 97 c230 w/ 130k now and have two issues of concern. The windshield wipers are starting to act funny when i put them on the lowest setting sometimes it will just stop wiping after a while then i turn em off and back on and they'll work but every once in a great while stop again. My friend has a 97 c280 w/ 190k on it and her wipers won't work on the high setting at all. Was wondering if this is a switch or relay issue? Also my steering gear box has some play in it about 1-2 inches worth and was wondering if possible to adjust it (tighter) or just simply replace it? Any info would be greatly appreciated thanks again

The W202 wiper gearing has always been an issue. Try searching for lubrication tricks for that gearing.

The steering gear can be adjusted. How about the drag link assembly? IS it the cause of freeplay?

Thanks for your reply DOC! Well the wiper assembly i have lubricated it just a few months ago but it is a power loss to the motor. I noticed one time i wiggled the multi function switch (wiper/turn signal stolk) the wipers started workin again. Well the steering gear box issue is because goin down the interstate 70-75 requires a bit more work to keep it straight than i'd expect. When sitting still you can move the steering wheel back and forth a good inch to two of play. Compared to my friends 190k c280 my car drives like a 1982 dodge horizon when it comes to going straight down the freeway. Other than these two little issues i'm very thrilled with the car. I just had it tuned up, it climaxed 30.1 mpg goin 130 miles with the cruise set at 74mph in the missouri hills which i was very proud of. thanks

The wiper/combi switch can be damaged by excessive amperage draw due to a gearing issue.

To check the steering gear have some one move the steering wheel & see if the Pittman arm is moving OR not.

IF there isn't any movement then either adjust the steering box OR have a shop adjust it.

Hi M.B. Doc,

Can you give us basic instructions on adjusting the gear box? I searched and didn't find anything. I have the same issue and my drag link is fairly new. I will double check using your test described but I am suspecting the gear box. Will a worn out damper cause this also?

Thanks

Damper only reduces vibrations from the wheel "tramp" (tires)
