97 S 500 Brake Squeal
I have a 1997 S-500 with 38,000 miles on it. The brakes squeal only when in reverse....guessing there is something in the pads that is making it do that? They don't squeal when you step hard on them, but do when you are slowly backing out the garage or a parking space.
Any ideas on this? Brakes work great and are silent when going forward. Not a problem, but a Mercedes is supposed to be seen and not heard.....unless you want it to be! |

It's possible that the shims were not installed when the pads were renewed. I had the same problem a while back and after installing the shims, the squealing disappeared.

Somewhat a normal situation. MOST cars have "some" noise during light braking.
Possibly some brake paste on the back of the pads would "help" for a while.

Sorry for resurrecting a fairly old thread, but my S420 is doing the same thing. It sounds a trash truck when it backs up. Are the shims available separately or do they only come with pads?
Also, sort of a n00b question, but when I use the grease, where and how much do I apply? I assume it would be a light coating along the entire back of the pad. Thanks.
