1990 560sel Trany Noise
Before I pull it may be some one can give me an idea of what might be wrong. The cars in great shape, 180K miles. Changed fluid each 50K.
Felt a shudder starting from a curb up a hill. started getting a whine like an impeller rubbing. Got damn loud thru 3rd into forth. Sounded like maybe a water pump squeal. As I nursed it home, the wine dissipated and it runs fine in forth. Reverse pulses a bit at idle. The whine is soft but I know its there. Pulled the pan and valve body. Not too bad, the filter has a 100K on it and it is a little crusty on the intake side. Found one shift spring broken, the biggest, 3 to 4 shift piston. I know thats not the problem. That's as far as I've gone on one of these. Is it straight forward to pull it apart and rebuild?? Gary:confused: |
Sure, it is a piece of cake. Did you replace that crusty filter?
Sounds like the B3 clutches are failing, but it could just be a packed filter causing the whine. |
Thanks Steveblf,
I thought just replacing the filter might be too optimistic. But it did act as if it was starved for fluid. If you think that will do it, I'll find a new filter and refill it. That would be a pleasant surprise. If I have to rebuild it, how much should I expect to pay for parts? Where to get them? Thanks, Gary |
The whining could be the filter but the other symtems will not be helped by the filter.
Fastlane can probably source all the parts. Use a genuine MB gasket set. We use genuine MB for all the parts but fastlane can probably offer that alternative. |
Wow, fingers crossed. Changed the filter and fluid. I think we've got it. The pulsing in reverse went away. Shifts are all good.
Will drive it about 50 miles tomorrow. Thanks.:D |
