short hose water pump to head 103

I searched on this and the last reply on the topic was 3 years ago.

Can you really replace this tiny hose (bypass?) without removing the water pump? One reply said yes, but didn't embellish.

Another said to cut 1/4 inch off water pump pipe - scary!

Could I just loosen the pump a bit or would that destroy the gaskets?
