Oil warning lite 99 SL500

Greetings everybody,
I have the oil can shape warning lite coming on and off in my 99 SL500, also the odometer flashes a warning of -2 quarts, it comes on with the warning sound and it stays for a minute or two while driving and then it goes off .The oil level on the dip stick is on full mark, the oil is less than 2,000 miles Mobil one syntetic, the engine has 72,000 miles on the clock and the oil is change religiously at 3,000 miles, is it posible that a sensor might be faulty from water splashing on it. this started after I drove in the rain thru one of the Florida flash downpours yesterday, there was a couple of nasty puddles on the road and I hit one of them hard enough to send water as high as the top of my fenders, never saw it till I drove right thru it. The engine appears dry no signs of water in the compartment or on top of the engine anywhere.
What can it be?

Its possible water is in the connector. The plug and the sensor can been seen on the upper right side of the main oil pan. I'd seperate the connector and check it and clean it as necessary.

It's also not uncommon for those sensors to fail.

The sensor is on the oil pan pretty much directly above the drain plug.

Check to see it is still attached and if it is, if the connection is dry and making good contact.

They do fail also. Very easy to change the next time you do a oil change. Maybe 15 minutes.
