Brake Dust Shields - Revised Opinion
For over a year I have used dust shields on a W210 and W124, with no problems. It seems the down sides on their use concerns rotor warping. Recently I talked with my independent service man and their experience is the rotors are OK, it is the calipers that get cooked over time and eventually fail. He showed me a pile of ruined calipers they have replaced and the dust shields that went with them. His recommendation is do not use them.
I have used this shop over twenty years, and know they are staight shooters. I took my shields off. Since I have peviously endorsed these things, I figured I had better "fess up". Ed |

about alternatives:
i've seen the current models with pretty ugly dust, specially on the fronts and since these shields have been around forever, i assume that it is an ongoing concern. i decided long ago that they were not a good idea and went looking for other options. i've used mintex "red box" pads on another car and noticed someone had them for sale on one of the other forums. it produces a light brown dust and maybe less of it - for me it's a godsend. there's barely any dust after a week and you can just spritz rims with "instant shine" products, wipe, and they're bright and shiny again. it's not a racing pad, there are other mintex pads for that purpose but the red box is good for daily driver applications and they last a relatively long time. anyone used them on 124's at all? also interested in other options. cheers... |

I was always in favor of brake dust shields, but never purchased a set. So I just methodically wipe down the wheels on all of the vehicles at night. Takes about 30 minutes, or usually less, since only one car is ever out at any time...
