Sluggish M119
1994 E420 with 171,000 Miles.
Symptoms The transmission isn't kicking down at WTO nor does WTO affect acceleration. The Engine seems to be producing remarkably little power. Check Engine light kicked in. Code 19. |

With that mileage....I would start with basics.
Has the engine compression been checked? Does the car have ASR? Has the timing chain been replaced OR checked for stretch?

Just wondering, can you check a 119 timing chain for stretch without removing it. I'm not sure how much stretch is acceptable.

If the engine feels low on power you could have a blocked cat. My car ran like a dog but threw no code. Once I replaced the right side cats, it ran like a scalded cat.

I like the cats and dogs analogy.

It has ASR but I haven't encountered an issues with it yet. No unexplainable episodes in limp home mode. Timing Chain hasn't been touched. Quote:

Easy to check for t/c stretch. Set the motor at 45 deg BTDC at that point you should be able to put a pin OR bolt into each of the cam bearings.
Possibly a tooth off on 1 camshaft.

Could be as simple as broken throttle cable - check that too - $30 fix...

Thanks, MB Doc. The next time I have the valve covers off, I'll try the pins.
EliotW, I think the code 19 is a common problem on 119 engines and it may not be what's causing your lack of power. I had a code 19 and my engine was running fine. Jim Forgione explains all about it on his web site.
