Code Reader Problems
I have a 93 E320 Wagon and have never been able to pull codes off it.
The push button on the reader in the car is non functional. I noticed that all the wires under it have had a minor amount of insulation cut away as if the PO's were troubleshooting this at one time. I cannot find any wiring diagrams of this unit and am looking for any suggestions on how to start. I have already built a reader (A Dalton design) and cannot get that to function as well. |
Test #1`
Do you have 12 v at diagnostic connector socket #16 [ test from #16 to battery neg w/key ON If NO, change fuse #9.................. |
Test 1 Result
Voltage measured at Connector 16 w/ key on. I will need to recheck becuase the meter I used is a 0-50 span and it looked just under 10V. Once I dig out the better meter, I will report. I retried the push button since I had not done so after putting dielectric grease on all the fuese after fixing my aux fans. Still no pulsing from the LED. |
Test the tool u built accoss the battery:
test 1- Red on + , yl on neg...led should light test 2- Red on pos, blk on neg...led should light when the button is pressed. |
Hand reader ok - Red to battery, yellow to ground - LED lit
Red to battery, black to ground, button pressed - led lit I did have a blown fuse in the hand reader. D |
Cool..
You would be surprized at how many do not know the tool is polarity sensitive when they make it..which is why I have +/- indications on the plan........ What do you have at pins 8 and 14?? |
OK - the car's default reader is DOA - can't seem to get the LED to respond.
Got codes with the hand reader. Pulled and cleared - drove around, then pulled and cleared again. Here they are First Run Pin 6 - 2 and 8 Pin 8 - 4, 25,33,42,49 Pin 14 - 2,5,11 - 5 would NOT clear Took car for ~30 min drive Pin 6 - 8 Pin 8 - 4, 25, 28, 33, 42 Pin 14 - 5,11 5 still won't clear. Ran pin 7 as well Pin 7 - 1 pin 10 would not respond |
<<OK - the car's default reader is DOA - can't seem to get the LED to respond.
>> Go to pin 3 with tool...that will access DM /N59 module the same as Built-in PB |
Arthur,
I found a reference document (for the CS1000 reader) on one of the threads discussion codes. I saw the note for pin 3 and did try to read it but I am getting a constant voltage on that pin. When I plug in the LED is automatically on. Sounds like the original LED wore out from a constant voltage. Suggestions? |
Does your car have a CE and the PB ??
|
Ok - Ce and PB refer to...? Don't know the acronyms
|
Sorry ..thought you did..
CE is Check Engine lamp PB is built-in Push Button Led/Sw combo...at DM 16 pin box Federal version did not have it..Cal versions did ..so, that is the why of the question.. |
Ahhh
Check engine light is NONfunctional. Turn on the key (w/o starting) and all warning lights but the CE light come on. I suspect some jury rigging by PO. After I bought the car I found the ABS light light but it was removed from its socket in the instrament panel and tucked back in the dash. As for the PB - Its there but nonfunctional. It was the reason I began this thread :) . Should I get the VIN for a check of the vehicle version? |
<<Should I get the VIN for a check of the vehicle version?>
Don't have to..as I said , if you have PB, you have Cal Manadate Emmisions system with N/59 module ..someone did not like looking at the CE lamp and did a nasty.. I will get the proper test procedures to you........... |
Thanks Arthur,
I recall on the Carfax report the car originally came from CA and lived there for some time. I also recall when doing the harness, there was some reference to a module on the drivers side wheel well which when I was doing the wiring appeared to be absent. |
Yeah. I think someone yanked the N/59 module.............sucks..
Hey, look at it this way..they converted it to Fed Vesion for ya ....LOL Do you live in an Emmissions Inspection state??????????/ |
PA - Southcentral region
All they do is a visual check (probably of the CAT) and a gas cap check so I think I am good. |
Research so far.
Based on the codes taken and research here and elsewhere, I have several obvious items to deal with. Pin 8 Code 4 - MAF sensor trouble. I will get some MAF cleaner and try to clean this out this week and hopefully wipe this code. I also found a link on how to troubleshoot the unit from another thread - http://www.ms-motor-service.com/ximages/pg_si_0079_en_web.pdf Code 25 - CMP sensor bad - Haven't figured this out yet. Code 33 - Max retard setting reached - symptom of other problems or reaction to MAF or CMP sensor troubles? Code 42 - CAN communication from EA/ISC module faulty - is this due to the CA to Federal conversion? Pin 14 Code 4 - Stop lamp switch error? Sounds like I need a replacement switch. COuld this be triggering the ABS light? Code 11 - Fuel Shutoff to LFI-SF module?? GOt an HM system so I must be looking at the wriong code sheet. Pin 6 - Was not able to find code sheets for my model but this is either the SRS or ABS module. Tasks in short term Replace Stop Light Switch (or check wiring first) Clean MAF |
Just clear 6 and reset. ..you had a voltage supply interruption.
It is not ABS,....it is AB [air bag/srs] |
All those codes (on pins 6, 8, and 14) came back after I cleared each of the earlier ones and after a 30 min test drive.
Should I still go ahead with the Stop Lamps Sw and MAF clean? |
Yes.
My last post simply tells you what was found for pin 6. You said you did not know what the codes for that pin were and you also thought they were a possible ABS code..that it what I was addressing.. |
Thanks for all your help this weekend. I wouldn't have gotten a 1/4 as far as I did without your guiding hand.
Gonna work on these items over the next week and will report back as I get results or failures. Thanks. |
