Crank set 180 degrees out of phase 103 190E 2.6L
Just realized last night that I set the crank 180 degrees out of phase on this 1991 190E 2.6L. Forgot to point the woodruff key down when installing the vibration damper and had the timing marks pointing up.
With the chain temporarily attached to the cam gear set to zero degrees by the marker, the engine turns without interference but cant hear any air passing out of the cylinders with plugs off. Realizing my mistake, I am looking for a method to correct the error: 1) remove crank pulley, crank bolt and vibration damper 2) place vib damper timing marks on opposite side of woodruff key. 3) Set cam so valves are non interfering 4) Feed a second chain and set the crank at or near zero degrees TDC, #1 up. 4a) May be best to set crank many degrees before #1 TDC so piston is a bit low in the cylinder? 5) Turn the camshaft to the timing mark 6) Turn crank and remove second chain Hope this makes sense, Robert Illan ![]()
