Speedometer Cable Installation 89 MB 190E
Undertaking the replacement of the speedo cable on my 89 MB190E today. ordered and received the cable yesterday. Pulled the cluster, removed the cable, removed the end to the transmission location. Installed new cable through firewall after connecting to cluster first. The new cable end that goes into the transmission looks the same as the old one, but doesn't seem to want to go into the hole on the transmission. I compared and they look identical. I noticed that the cable is secured after installation by a vice type mounting/ screw tightening opening. I gently wedged a flat blade into the screw/clamp to open a bit further. The cable still will not go into the mounting flush. How long is the actual cable wire suppose to protrude into the transmission? Maybe that's the problem. Should I put a little grease around the metal end and tap it into the hole? I don't want to force it. Thanx
*After figuring out the search engine on this forum, I have read several other topics regarding the "speedometer cable" issues. I hope that's all that is wrong with mine is just the cable itself. It was not functioning when I bought the car and figure it was just the cable. The cable end into the tranny looks worn so I figured that was the culprit. After reading about broken odometer springs and the such, I hope I haven't opened a "can of worms" with this project. Last edited by RCH89190E; 08-23-2008 at 08:17 PM. |

Well this morning the worst has occurred. I got under and tried to spread the transmission cable mount hole just a tad and the dang thing broke off right where the bolt tightens it in place. I hate that aluminum/ alloy stuff. My question is now....can the transmission speedo mount section be replaced. I can't find an exploded diagram showing how big of a section this is. If so, where can I find one?

I'm not sure why it wouldn't go in for you but when I read your first post I immediately thought about what you describe in your second post. The part that is broken is the rear extention housing of the trans. It is a fair piece of work to replace, two three hours for an experienced tech.

Thanks, I guess it will probably mean that I won't have a speedometer that works for a while. I'll check for some old housings around some tranny shops here and see if i can come up with one. OR...just replace the whole unit with another. Probably cheaper!
