What is the best way to pay for a part from Germany?

There is a part on Ebay Germany that I want to buy but the seller doesn't take PayPal. What is the easiest and cheapest safe way to pay him? I'm only talking $10 to $20 (I hope) plus shipping.

I wouldn't send cash. It could get "lost" in transit. You can send $$ via Western Union to the seller who could pick it up at any WU office in Germany. I send money to my friends in Stuttgart that way. I would ask the seller why he will not take paypal...

German banking systems are sooo much more secure than American. That's why. Except for PFCU.

Paypal has been hacked and identities stolen. Ask me how I know.

Maybe someone here has friends in Germany and they can send the Ueberweisung/ funds transfer for you.

I was thinking more about cash being taken out of the mail. It has happened in our local PO...

WU is still the best way to send cash. Chase used to have a service, but they closed it down.

why many Europeans don't use Paypal

No, it's NOT odd from THEIR viewpoint. European banks are much more secure electronically than US banks. In previous jobs I used to track this. US Banks lose millions each year because of hackers hide the losses and suck it up.

Euro banks invest in more security systems, prosecute and pursue hackers more stringently (for example, the Swiss use retired GSG9 German anti terrorist police)-- I should have said -- almost viciously.

The Europeans have no faith in the US bank systems because their own guys can hack them. Paypal is also legendary in the hacker community as a place that's easy to hack.

Compared to the German Uberweisung/electronic transfer system, Paypal is no more safe than leaving the money in the milk chute next to the side door at grandma's house. So the Europeans don't use it.

Some small Euro auto businesses like Haiko Frahne use it because their business insurance covers fraud losses. But Hans Average is not gonna risk it, especially when his personal bank account insurance will cover fraud on Uberweisung.

IMHO, Ebay is starting to force small sellers to use Paypal or get out of the business. They will change their mind when the fun goes out of bidding and they start to see the losses. Ebay is doing this because they own Paypal and get a piece of the action, so they will now start to force payment this way, to help their balance sheet.

BUT-- when business goes down among individual sellers, and they get slapped with a class-action lawsuit for restraint of trade, then kabango! it will stop and they will back off.

But the damage will be done. People don't forget.

Ever notice ALREADY how often the forum people here go on Craig's list to look for high dollar stuff like cars, engines and tools? That means they are not going to Ebay.

Any time a large company tries to enforce its monopoly, this happens. Walmart learned and re-thought its strategy successfully.

It will be fun to watch the drama at Ebay. Hopefully the outgoing execs will not be paid giant bonuses to reward them for failure when any normal person could have seen it coming a mile away.

Why not ask the seller for a recommendation?
Surely he can give you an answer other than he doesn't take Paypal.

Well, not exactly... Ebay owns 25% of Craigslist...

For 10 or 20 bucks, you're looking at 15 bucks fee for Western Union or a wire from your bank. You could probably get an Amex Travelers check for low fees, but there may be some delays in waiting for it to clear.
