Considering a 1998 E320 4-Matic ... what to look for ...
Hi everyone:
It's been WAY too long since I've posted on here ... I hope that everyone is well and enjoying their automobiles. I'm out in the country now, and am driving a ton. I'm looking to get something with all-wheel drive for the winters, and I found a Mercedes E320 4-Matic that I'm interested in as a second vehicle. It's a 1998, and has about 105k on the odometer. New tires and brakes. Seller states that there is a slight rattle coming from under the hood on occasion at idle. Mechanic states that it's a piece of metal in the catalytic convertor, and not a big deal. ?? Will definitely have a PPI done before purchasing. Anything specific that I should have the mechanic check or look out for? I've had W201's and 202's, but this would be my first 210, so not sure of all the "need areas" to check and watch out for. Seller is asking 7.3k - I think I can get it for 7 even ... fair price? Thanks everyone for the help. I hope to be happily contributing to the forum once again! Take care, Michael

The 1998 model year is in the clear in terms of the disastrous 4-matic systems from the 124 years, right?

This is the "Good" 4Matic. MB wasn't even sure if they wanted to use the 4Matic name on this system but finally decided to. I remember the service bulletin that told the dealers they can order the 4Matic badges for the early ones that were delivered without badges on the trunk.
The rattle would worry me. That good be alot of things both minor or major. The "catalytic converter" story, well just doesn't make sense to me, I guess one would have to hear it. Things to check on a 98, harmonic balancer, A/C problems, leaking differential front and rear, front cv boots. maintenance history including spark plugs, a/c filters, brake and coolant flush, stuff like that. Hi
I am thinking about purchasing a 1998 E320 with 88K miles. Is there anything I should ask or know about? It looks good and the interior is excellent condition |

Service records are of the utmost importance when considering a used MB. I would also suggest a pre-purchase inspection. I found it very helpful before I bought mine. But, the PPI doesn't substitute for good service history.
Be sure that the harmonic balancer has been changed out. It was a service recall, so it should have been done. If the original one is on there, I would get it changed ASAP ... lots of horror threads on here about bad harmonic balancers literally destroying the front end of the car. Look for signs of rusting - excessive rusting is not good. Mine had some spots, which for a 10 year-old car is normal, but big spots would make me a bit leary. Mine's been great since I've gotten it (I'm knocking on the fake wood desk) - 1.2k and no issues to-date. -Michael
