Differential fluid level on a W124??

I am replacing the differential fluid on my '87 300E. The manual calls for .7 liters of gear fluid. I have more experience with the American cars where you typically fill the differential until it comes out the filler hole. I added about .9 liters fully expecting to see the fluid run out the hole. Since I was over the recommended fill, I drained about .2 liters. This puts me definitely a ways below the fill hole. For Mercedes do you go by the .7 liter fill capacity and is this typically quite a bit below the fill hole? I don't want to overfill the differential, but I also don't want to run it low on fluid.

Thanks,

Jim

Are you sure that the replacement differential calls for the same amount of fluid?

When I changed the fluid in my 210.020, the specified quantity of fluid (1.1l, IIRC) put the level right at the bottom of the fill plug opening.

Thanks Matt. I went by the manual they had at the auto parts store. I just checked my owners manual and it say 1.1 liters. I bet that's the difference.

Thanks again,

Jim

I always thought if you could reach in and touch it you had enough. It will expand a bit during use from heat.
