Differential fluid level on a W124??

I am replacing the differential fluid on my '87 300E. The manual calls for .7 liters of gear fluid. I have more experience with the American cars where you typically fill the differential until it comes out the filler hole. I added about .9 liters fully expecting to see the fluid run out the hole. Since I was over the recommended fill, I drained about .2 liters. This puts me definitely a ways below the fill hole. For Mercedes do you go by the .7 liter fill capacity and is this typically quite a bit below the fill hole? I don't want to overfill the differential, but I also don't want to run it low on fluid.

Thanks,

Jim
