ABS sensor construction & functionality
My '84 500SL Euro's ABS light comes back on after the startup-underway tests.
I checked the right front sensor and it was severely damaged by battery acid which occurred during a previous ownership. I bought a new BOSCH sensor w/MB logo on it which appears to be fine. But it has a fitted mounting bracket unlike my original. My questions are: 1-if the sensor protrudes into the cylindrically-shaped wheel aperture less than the original by about 1/5", due to the aforesaid bracket,... does that nullify it's functionality as it must actually contact the wheel, or what ? 2-does the sensor 'sense' the wheel's motion by magnetic induction and thereby generate a current transmitted to one of the 'computers', and results in an 'ABS moment', or what ? 3-if this new sensor does work, and I assume it does since the vehicle ABS initialization at startup and getting underway at about 5mph routines both occur, then....... among what possible causes do I still get an on ABS light after the startup routines ? Thanks to all for your shared experience and knowledge, Courtney
