e320 w124 rear sway bar grinding noise help please

1994 E320 Sedan

I changed the rear sway bar per the instructions found on the w124 manuals on CD. I've done this before on a 1988 e300 so I had some experience with this total pain in the butt project.

Problem: install was completed in 2.5 hours, got everything back together and it road and drove great. Later that evening, I was heading to a friends house for dinner and started to hear this metal on metal sound as if someone was holding a screwdriver to the brake disk that was warped so that you only hear the scrapping on half the rotations.

It speeds up with tire rotation speed and slows and gets louder when the tire rotation speed is reduced. Has nothing to do with engine rpm.

The hard part of this diagnosis is that the sound comes and goes, it will happen for a while, go away and then come back. Last night, while driving home, I was scaring the local kids with the sound, this morning, quite as a mouse my entire commute to work. I hit speed bumps, railroad tracks and pots holes the entire drive and not a peep.

What did I break or do wrong?
