Unhappy Severe Intermittent Steering Vibration

My 1984 300SD, which has 309,XXX miles, has recently developed a very intermittent and severe shimmy at highway speed. The problem manifests itself as a soft vibration first felt through the steering wheel, then rises to a severe shake which is felt throughout the entire car. The episodes only last a matter of a few seconds after which the car proceeds to drive normal. Any and all help/advice is greatly appreciated.

Aside from some imbalance that starts it off, you must have some severe play in the steering or the longitudinal strut mounts.

Steering shock and shocks in general can also affect this when really poor.
