I just purchased a 1987 300E and wondered if going from a W123 to W124 was an upgrade.
![]() The 300E runs a bit quieter than the 84 300CD, and is peppier!!! It has 104K miles on it and is in decent shape, Original Becker radio Original Pirelli spare Medium Red interior (177) A/C works Blower Motor was replaced One problem I came across after taking delivery was that the passenger side window does not work. When we test drove the vehicle last saturday it was raining and my "co-pilot" didn't think of opening the window. I in the other hand opened everything but that window, oh well! All in all a very nice car !!!!

If that's your only problem, you're home free!

Nice car. Don't use that original spare tire, it is well past its sell-by date.

I don't know if going from a diesel to a gasser is an upgrade
![]() I think the W123 body is classier, but the W124 is probably a better handling car and you have ABS and an airbag. I think it is an good trade up.

The 123 to 124 is a giant leap in terms of technology.

Biased...124'er here....
I do like the 123 but the lines of the W124 combine elegance and a more aggressive look....something that can't be had with the W123... Congrats!

I drove 123's for over ten years and 124's for over 10 years as well.
The 124's are far more comfortable to drive and ride in. Handling is far superior to 123's. The 123's are easier and less expensive to mantain, possible better built too. I wish I found the 123 more comfortable but after I drove a 124 I was no longer happy with the comfort and handling of a 123. I also prefer the 123 body style. |

Thanks for the comments.
The W124 is defenitley more complex than the 300CD, for example, I found out the the headrest were electric... I expect that with all this technology it will be a bit more expensive to maintain than the 300CD. I figured I would start with replacing the fluids (trans & oil),the air filter and continue with the items 865sp300e pointed out. I do have two questions for now:
Thanks again!!!

Factory alarm is activated when the car is locked. De when un.
It's just a "break window and open from inside" kind of alarm....nothing fancy.

I had a sedan then a coupe version of the W124. Both very solid & comfortable ride.
The alarm monitors the doors and the hood, and would sound if any of them is opened while the system is armed (by locking vehicle with the key). The owner's manual calls for premium gas, 91+ octane. Have fun with your W124 ! Last edited by Impala; 11-14-2008 at 10:11 PM. |
