W124 Rear window gets stuck and stops early

I have a 1992 300e (2.6L) and the rear left window seems not to be working well. I had opened the window normally and then upon closing the window completely, I heard a snapping noise.

I then could no longer open the window up and down easily and the window falls by itself in the completely up position. Both switches work and the motor activates but it seems that it only goes for a few seconds and then stops.

I took off the panel and the track is clear and it seems that the cable has some creases to it. Could it be the cable or the entire window regulator with motor? The window does not stay closed and it slowly goes down when I go over bumps.

Thanks for your help!

Best Regards,
Louis

The cable is probably off the spool. I've never had luck rewinding spools given the tension involved and creased cable. If you can't find solid instructions for rewinding the spool, look for a good used OE regulator over a cheap new one. IIRC, a same door regulator from any year 124 sedan will fit. You might need to splice wires with a regulator from a later car. The motor shouldn't be a big cost factor with a used regulator. Check the hinge area wires while you're in there.

reduce pressure on the regulator frame tip

After you're finished fixing the window, and for the rest of your windows, here's a tip that I got from here that's worth repeating.

To increase the life of your window regulators, after the window glass has gone as far up as it can travel (full closed position), give the window switch a little tap downward to slide the glass very slightly down. Just enough to reduce the pressure on the regulator frame without causing any air or water leaks.
