melted engine wiring harness

Hey, kids.

I have a 1987 300E that ran perfectly until the engine wiring harness melted on me a few years ago. I posted about this a while back, but I think I now have a better understanding of the situation.

I don't know what caused the short, but I think it likely that there was a tear in the insulation and a bare wire shorted against another, or against the body or hood? Anyway, the whole thing is shot.

It looks like I can get a replacement harness in excellent condition for $500.00. I'm competent to do the work, no problem. It's all one harness in the engine compartment, if I'm not mistaken.

My question is: is there another possibility for the original short, one from elsewhere in the car? I don't want to replace the thing and see it melt on me because the problem was elsewhere to begin with.

Thanks,
Jimmy
