Unhappy problems with smart key on 1998 mercedes E320 4matic wagon

The smart key on our 1998 E320 4Matic Wagon opens the doors, etc. but won't allow us to start the car. We had it towed to a dealer and are terrified of the forthcoming call. Any ideas on arming ourselves with what could really be wrong? First post so excuse our ignorance. Thanks.

Is it possible the car battery (not the key battery which has nothing to do with it) is just dead? When you put in the key could you hear the steering wheel unlock?

Did you try another key before you had it towed? When you inserted the key, were you able to turn it?
