Acceptable transmission fluids? (1987 260e)

Hello, what kind of transmission fluids are acceptable from the local hardware stores? Are Quaker State transmission fluids any good? How about Castrol? What are you folks using in your beloved car?

I'm using Mobil 1 ATF. I rebuilt my trans a couple of years ago, and I'm a big fan of synthetic lubricants for the long haul. I understand there may have been a formulation change recently, and it may be less suitable than it once was. I think my Mobil 1 would be the older formula. You'd need to do a complete fluid change to use any synthetic effectively.

If you're not going the synthetic route, any good Dexron III fluid will be fine. I like Castrol products, Quaker State should be OK, too imo.

I use Valvoline Dexron VI (its backwards compatible with Dex III) "Full Synthetic" fluid in all of our cars...it works great and it isn't too expensive.

No...I use Valvoline standard (non-synthetic) power steering fluid. Works fine.

Don't use trans fluid for the power steering....unless you want it to leak.
