m-b star diagnostics ....advice

I'm tring to read and reset any error codes in my sl320 softtop controller, I undrstand that post 95 vehicles need the m-b star diagnostic unit to do this and pre 96 vehicles can be done with a switch and an led..

mine is 96 so in theory needs the mb star unit, however, i spoke to someone who told me, the later cars can still be read with the led hack as the 16way connector is still located in the engine bay

before i burn anything out...can anyone confirm this?
