Fuel Tank Filling Problem SLK320
I have a SLK320 which I acquired a few months ago. The car has been great so far expect when I have to fill the car at the gas station. The problem I have is that the fuel pump at the gas station stops every second. It takes me about 20 minutes to fill up the tank since the pump keep shutting all the time. I have tried to keep the nozzle out a little when filling but no success. Even at the smallest fuel flow from the fuel pump it keep shutting. I have tried different gas stations and no luck. It is unbelievable and I can not figure out what could be the problem.
I need to mention though that all this time I have had this problem at every fill up expect two times that I was able to fill the car completely without the fuel pump shutting off all the time. I can not explain how and why that happened or what caused it to work those times. Please if you have any ideas share. I can work on these cars myself to some extend. |

Most likely a faulty charcoal cannister. MB's that are made for the USA have OBVR (on-board vapor recovery) systems. If the car gets overfilled the raw fuel will go into the charcoal cannister & ruin it!
Most likely that way when you purchased the car.

Thank you for your reply. I took the car to the gas station and there I removed the purge valve. When trying to fill up with gas it still was having problems with filling.
Does this prove that my charcoal canister valve is not what is causing the problem? I think the tank should have vented through the tube that goes to the purge valve, right? Oh and I forgot to mention that I do not get any check engine light codes and the car runs fine otherwise. I am wondering if it is the tank overfill check valve or the fuel filler tube check valve may be stuck as shown in the attached picture. Please help! |

You'll have to dis-connect the vent line between the canister and the tank to diagnose the problem. In the picture, it's the line in the center of the canister.
This thread may help. Short fill Help Please |
