Front seat?
I have a 1986 300E and I need a front driver seat. I got a front seat from a junk yard, the problem is,it is the wrong color. I was just going to exchange the bottom of the new seat with my old seat and put the right color tex on it. My question is can I take the gray tex off the hole seat and put the right color on?

Yeah, you mean transfer the original covers onto this "new" seat, that should work OK.

How do you do the back of the seat? I can do the bottom, just not sure where to start on the back.

Screws that hold the back cover on (down low on the cover), then the headrest, then you will see how the cover is held on looking at the back of the backrest.

Not as easy as I thought, Had to take a break. Cant figure how to get the rest of the back off. Lots of clips in there.

Yes, On the back of the seat where the back panel was at the top of panel opening. I cant figure how to get the tex off, all of the clips are out.

I mean the WHOLE backrest. I believe that has to come off to get the tex off from around the hinge area, where the backrest frame attaches to the bottom cushion frame. Then the tex attaches inside the rear of the backrest (not just the clips, but around the edge), then the tex also attaches at the bottom of that rear opening, so you can pull this "flap" out, then with all the clips detached the cover will pull up off the seat backrest, sort of like taking your hand out of a glove. Have to have the headrest removed of couse, and there is sometimes a trim piece for each "leg" of the headrest as well.

Would help if I was there of course, but the egde of the tex that is inside the seat in that area might have like a plastic channel that slips over the edge of the frame up in there, is what I am thinking, would need to pull the tex up and thin the channel slips off the edge, I think is how it works. Can you experiment with cover on the new seat, the one that is the wrong color?

You're going to have to stick your hand up there and see what holds it in place. The only thing I'd say for sure is the frame has an edge up there and the tex attaches to it. There are various ways they did this. Typically the metal edge has a channel in it (like a "J" shape) and then the edge of the material has a similar shape, done in plastic and sewn onto the edge of the material. The channel sewn on to the material will "give" a little (because the material, in this case the tex) will stretch so you can push this plastic channel off the metal lip.
Be a little careful, on older cars they used sharp metal barbs to simply hook the material on to the frame, if you feel pointy barbs up there buy a box of bandaids. Gilly

I gave up, put it all back together. It is a nice seat, what would you think if I would just switch seats and put a seat cover over the gray one?

Ahhh, your call. You absolutely can't see what holds the cover in place up in there huh?
