done did something stupid......

Rewind about two years ago. I decided to go to the dealer and get a new fuel filter. I did not however buy new washers or remember were they go. I was able to seal up the lines with a combination of different ones placed appropriatley. These washers generally work, but they leak every so often requiring me to tighten em up and reminding me to get the real ones. I decided last week to do just that. Today, I get under there and start working. Of course I cant get them to seal up for the life of me. I try this way and that way. I finally am getting very frustrated, and am able to get the leak down to a trickle. I think if I could just get it a little tighter, it will be ok. Did I mention the pump is running? Well in my stupidity, I touched the terminal at the pump with a wrench and the pump shut off. So what did I ruin? The pump or they relay? I knew it was a fluke when yesterday I replaced the motor mounts and it went very smoothly.

You probably just blew a fuse or (possibly) damaged the relay. Check all fuses and the relay. I doubt you damaged the pump....its just a metal can with a motor in it.

The short may have killed the components inside it....easy to tell if you take it out and open it up for a look. Try checking the fuses on the OVP too.

you probably should have ruined yourself, with fuel leaking and spark....is this the right answer?

Yeah, you're lucky you didn't blow up a car/yourself rather than a relay. Must have been those gas fumes!

its funny though. When we replaced my dads in tank fuel pump on the F150, there were exposed wires that are actually immersed in fuel. Not sure how that is too much different other than sparks.

Its the environment. You could create a shower of sparks inside a gas tank, but it won't blow, no oxygen.

Now, sparks out in the open with a stream of gas flowing and fumes all over, THAT is a recipe for explosion. The inside of a fuel pump is an exposed motor immersed in gas....but no problem, since there's no oxygen.
