1998 E300 Turbo Diesel W210 - SRS Light Comes On When Very Hot Inside

Hi,

Last summer one day I noticed when I started the car the red SRS light on the cluster stayed on while I was driving. I remembered it being a particularly hot day and the car was parked in the sun. At the next shut-down the light went out after I restarted the car and it never happened again...until today. Same conditions, same light, same reset at the next shut down and restart once the interior had cooled. Is there one part prone to this type of failure or do I have to resort to having the SDS scan done at the stealer? Also, will the SRS system store the code even though the light has reset itself?

Thanks in advance!

I would start with the brake pedal switch. It is very prone to failure.

I didn't think the brake pedal switch had any effect on the airbag system? I know failures of it have had issues with the traction control and ABS system but my light is SRS.

Most likely a seat belt buckle or seat recognition sensor.

Only a scan will reveal the problem.

Thanks Doc...would I be correct in assuming that the code for the fault will store in memory so even if the light is off now they can tell me what the cause was? I'll need a state safety inspection next month and I was just going to have them scan it then but I want to make sure the code will still be in there so I am not wasting a diagnostic charge.

Yes that system should HOLD the code, even with the SRS lamp off.
