W202 C Class Problems

I am now having few problems with my 94' C Class W202. Can anyone help me here?

1) ABS indicator light is on even after I have replaced the ABS sensor as told by workshop, they expect the ABS ECU board to be faulty... do you think this is the problem?

2) Aircon not cool sometimes but when i restarted the engine, then OK. A/C compressor replaced two days ago but problem still persist. Could it be the problem of cooling coil?

3) Sometimes NO Air or A/C come out from the centre, only from the sides when accelerating. When accelerator was released, air started to flow.

4)Engine jerk pretty hard when gear is shift to D or R and the car started to shake pretty much, engine become not stable.. and stop sometimes

5) The reverse gear seems to reponse very slowly. It will take the car to start reversing only in 3-4 seconds when gear is in R.

6)Noisy sound from gear knob when the car is accelerating, the gear is loose when feel.

7)The brake light from the right tail light seems to be dimmer compare to the right. Replace with several bulbs but still the same.

Re: W202 C Class Problems

It sounds like your shop has not diagnosed the problem, but are throwing parts at it. Is the light on all the time? An intermittant ABS light is also a sign of a charging system fault. An ABS wheel sensor problems usually shows by having the ABS engage at very low speed, but no warning light while driving. It sounds to me that proper diagnosis is your first priority.

For those two questions, you should ask Steve Brotherton, as his knowledge of AC systems is nothing short of amazing. Make a thread with the heading "AC problem in 1994 C220/280." BTW, please let us know WHICH car you have, and the mileage. And is it the same shop replacing the AC compressor? If the problem is persisting, again your diagnosis work is incomplete.

4)Engine jerk pretty hard when gear is shift to D or R and the car started to shake pretty much, engine become not stable.. and stop sometimes

Could be many things. Is the check-engine light on? This car is subject to wiring harness problems, and they cause misfiring. Is the tune-up in good shape?

5) The reverse gear seems to reponse very slowly. It will take the car to start reversing only in 3-4 seconds when gear is in R.

That's a sign of tranny problems. Might need a complete re-do (about $1500-1800USD) or just some bits. Most likely the former. Again, no idea of your mileage.

6)Noisy sound from gear knob when the car is accelerating, the gear is loose when feel.

Shifter bushings or tranny problem. I'm not much help with this one!

7)The brake light from the right tail light seems to be dimmer compare to the right. Replace with several bulbs but still the same.

This sounds pretty obvious, but do you have the rear fog light on?

1. I would suspect that your charging system might have low voltage... this would cause the ABS light to come on. But you will have to get the codes read to find out for sure.

2. Can't help you there, except if you just had A/C work, take it back and make sure they fix the problem, at no cost to you!

3. I have this ctr vent airflow problem as well. My recirc flap is also faulty... wind blows through the vents when I'm on the fwy with the system OFF. It is a vacuum leak. Not too expensive... fairly common.

4. Your engine jerks hard when put into gear? Does the CAR jerk? SOunds like it might be the front FLEX DISC... usually around 100k miles these will go bad. Symptoms include a clunk/shake when put into gear, or from D to R or from R to D. Part is about $75, and labor should be less than 2 hours.

5. This reverse delay is a common problem with the trans. If you do a search, you will find many results. If you can't live with the delay, then you must do a rebuild. But I live with my 2-3 second delay... no problem really.

6. Sounds like the shifter bushings are worn. Also not an expensive repair.

7. The only thing I can suggest is to change all 3 brake lights with OEM bulbs purchased @ your local MB dealer. Likely, and hopefully, this will clear up this problem. Is your "EXT LIGHT OUT" warning indicator lit in the dash?

Good luck! How many miles do you have?

7. Try swapping the bulbs left to right. It could be the socket, wiring or probably the ground. Check the parking light intensity too.

I have the same problem in my car and i went to a workshop where he started try and error, and after waiting for 3 hours he was not able to repair it. Is there anything i can check myself to fix this problem, it is a real problem since i'm living in Dubai and the temp is 45cel.

Thanks ...

It will help if you say what exact car you have.
