'88 190E 2.3 Trans Removal
Hi, '88 190 4 cylinder, bought cheap with a bad trans (no drive in any gear) and other issues. OEM manual says you have to remove the engine and transmission together; is this necessary? I have removed other rwd transmissions, but never a Mercedes. Also need two good rear door trims in tobacco and other misc parts if you are parting one out. Thanks

If the manual says you have to....they are most likely right. Its easier to do that way. There may not be sufficient space on a 190 to get at the bolts between the motor/trans with it in the car. The only MB engine removal/install I've done was with the trans attached to the engine already....and that was with the huge heavy diesel....the little 4cyl gasser should be a bit lighter and easier.
Good opportunity to take it all out, clean up everything, and replace stuff thats hard to get at with it in the car....like the mounts....etc....

the trans can come out without pulling the motor, done it a few times on 4s and 6s. it's tight, but everything under there is on a 201. is it easier to pull it with the motor? don't know, might be. and, like the above poster mentioned, lotsa room to do lotsa things good luck, chuck.
