Question gas tank charcoal filter

my wife had a back rear tire problem which appears to have punctured a charcoal filter assiocated which the gas tank. The charcoal is all gone.

Mercedes 1998 E320 wagon

I do not have a tech manual for the car & the owner manual does not address the part.

It appears that it might be for gas tank vapor when filling but I am not sure.

Anyone with any knowledge would be helpful. Thanks

Tyree
