A/C is leaking somewhere....

1987 260E. From full, it takes about 3-4 days before the A/C stops functioning.

I swapped the shrader valve and the refrigerant is still leaking somewhere.
I also plugged that valve with the recharging device as well in hopes that was where it was still leaking but no luck.

Carpets are not wet in the interior.

Where else should I look to figure out where its leaking?

PS: It was converted to R134a by the dealership at some point in its life as there is a sticker, but the text has faded beyond recognition.

You need to have a a/c shop put dye in the system & then check for leaks.

Did you check the ac drain lines?

I had a hard time finding the ac leak (used dye and electronic). Finally found the leak, the ac drain lines has dye on it. Expensive $$$. I had the evap, heater core and compressor replaced. Everything is working now.

Thanks guys.

How much should an average shop charge to leak detect it? Just so I got a ballpark figure going in.

My dad has a leak detection kit, but I am not sure if its worth it, because I'd have to buy $20 worth of refrigerant again...and if I don't see anything it would be wasted. Neither of us know much about A/C systems, so it might be better just to take it to someone so I know what I am looking at to get it up and running again.

So-Cal in summer w/o air conditioning....not fun.

Keep in mind that some testers won't work with R-134, especially the older ones. The one I have works great on R-22, but won't "smell" R-134 at all.

The modern type will sniff 134 like a Champ. I bought an Inficon Tekmate a few months ago for $179. It's unbelievably effective. Technology marches on.
