how many miles per gallon does 260E normally run?
I surprisely could not find in the manual how many miles per gallon 260E normally runs??

The last time I checked, my 1989 260E returned close to 30mpg on a 450mi. highway trip at an average speed of about 70mph.
City driving should return arond 24-25mpg, driving. Obviously, the heavier the right foot is, the lower mpg you get. JackD

I am getting from 19 to 21 mpg with a speed from 60 to 100 mph on a highway and some driving in a city :-( with an oil leak on the front right engine side nearby a water pump and a failed emission test.

mine usually does around 19mpg as well.
I'm surprised to find out there's one out there that does 30mpg. that's unheard of but great !

Our 190E 2.6 (same driveline) gets about 12L/100km's in city driving (20 MPUSG) and about 10L/100km's (24 MPUSG) on the highway, cruising at 125-140 km/h (75-90mph).

I can get close to that in the 190E, but I just can't go slow enough! The car humms so nicely at 140km/h, I just kinda end up at that speed. 24 US at 90mph is decent, methinks.

alright someone please explain how to get 27mpg out of my 260E ?
i've done regular maint, plugs, wires, filters oxygen sensors. everything. so tune shouldn't be an issue ! what else ?

Doesn't the 260E have a steeper final drive? That might account for the highway mileage diff...

mine were replaced 6 months ago when it failed emissions and I had to get them changed along with the tune up / adjustments of all different kind to bring it back to specs.

My car is still using a little more than 9 liters per 100 km ( +/- 3.9 gal per 100 mi) with speed up to 120km per hour (on highways in Europe)? ( in the manuel they say 8.8 lit) . 380 000km 1988.

My '90 300E O2 sensor is about three years old.
The 260Es are geared lower and the engine turns higher RPMs. I've noticed a good bit of variation in mileage and power in different 124 cars. My '90 mileage was about 25 on the highway for years. A few months ago I adjusted the lambda and now it gets almost exactly 27. I would not have expected the adjustment to make an MPG difference but it did. Our '91 300E only gets about 25.5 highway. But it has more power than the '90.
