1991 300sl 722.5 transmission noise

My 722.5 trans started making a very faint clicking noise the other day. I could hardly hear it while driving with the top down, but by the time I got home I knew something was up.
My son and I took it out yesterday with the top up and we found that this clicking noise starts at about 30mph and gets faster as we went faster and was still there when I coasted in neutral.

I jacked the car and tested in the garage to make sure it was the trans and not the cat.
I'm thinking it starts when it shift into 3rd or 4th. The trans shift fine and drives OK as well. no leaks and the fluid smells and looks fine.

The car has 102k and runs like new!

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated
Best regards DC

Have you inspected the flex discs? Does the noise come from the trans? Did you verify the location of the sound?
