1989 300sel coolant issue

Ok, I have had a leak at the water pump area...drip running down driver side of oil pan....standard water pump dribble issue. Car does not overheat, runs great but I have been adding water and coolant because It literally ran to the ground. Well...now there is no leak! Where did it go? is this common? I just bought a new water pump, printed out all advice here available and about to tackle the pump......NOW WHAT???

Thanks
Warren

My guess is that you were not using distilled water to top off, and that the minerals in the water have formed an ersatz plug for the leak.

If this is true, then you can count on it leaking again at the worst possible moment. You can also bet that there is a ton of scale in your cooling system and you probably ought to do a citric acid flush when you put your new pump in.

If your radiator is original, don't be surprised if it leaks after the flush.
