Guess that car before the Big Reveal!

Here are the hints:

1978
300CL is the model
8-cylinder
two doors
diesel
coupe
"only a few exist in America"

And go...

For reference, you can see here: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Two-Door-1978-Mercedes-Benz-300CL-Very-Rare_W0QQitemZ330357030987QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUS_Cars_Trucks?hash=item4cead0404b&_trksid=p4506.c0.m24 5

what are we trying to guess exactly

riorust 09-03-2009 12:10 AM

I'm going to guess you bought a rare and desirable car, probably a Benz, am I warm?

POS 09-03-2009 07:27 AM

I'm a regular "browser" of ebay, and this car popped up for sale. Reading the description, I can't figure out ANYTHING that makes sense. I'm not selling it, and I'm not buying it - I'm just wondering what the hell it is based on his description.

teezer 09-03-2009 08:10 AM

there's no 300CL listed in Nitske's book which lists all models from 1946-1990

Chad300tdt 09-03-2009 08:23 AM

Sounds like a w123 coupe limo.:D:D

POS 09-03-2009 09:08 PM

That'd be refreshing to see.

"Extra gas tank in truck (total 40 gallons)."

In TRUCK???!!! "shome mishtake shurely!!!

I am thinking, despite all the confusion, lack of description, perhaps due to the fact that the Doctor squeezed the forceps too hard when he pulled the seller out, the vehicle may be a NA 1978 300CD W123 coupe.

And they have 5 cylinders, not 8, last I heard...:D

I need to talk to this guy: Hey hey man, you got 2 tens for a five? (Leetle trick I learnt in east Oakland....);)

*YAWN* a legend in the seller's so-called mind....

Ivanerrol 09-03-2009 09:48 PM

I would suggest it would be one of these - mislabeled.

They are not so rare. 450SL convertibles are more expensive.

It has to be an idiot selling a 300CD. 275k, a second tank and a large dent? Starting price at 15 grand? What else could it possibly be? I doubt 450SLC.

Avarec 09-03-2009 11:13 PM

i know exactly what it is(well dont we all) its some hacked up hybrid of a early mercedes sl w/ a diesel powerplant swaped in, be honest if it is, its probably a blast to drive but we all know the true value of it

also lets not go ahead of ourselves, might be a legit diesel sl ragtop

also there is one out there ive seen somewhere

t walgamuth 09-03-2009 11:21 PM

I say 450slc too.

Morons all think all mercedes are diesel.;)

TylerH860 09-03-2009 11:22 PM

I have never heard of a 450slc going 275,000 miles, making it more likely to be a 300CD, IMO.

Has anyone contacted him yet?

t walgamuth 09-03-2009 11:44 PM

I have never either but that is probably only because folks who had the money to buy them didn't need to drive them much.

4 days left in the auction, still no pics.
