Incorrect reading from digital odometer?

I came across a 98 C43 for sale and e-mailed the owner to ask a few questions. They were reluctant to tell me how many miles were on it. They say that the odometer is not reporting miles correctly. They have a Carfax report with a date on it from 15 months ago with 103K miles on it and today its showing 298K miles. Thats about 430 miles of driving every day between then and now. I'm perplexed how a digital odometer can report incorrectly. Does anyone have some insight on how they work, where a fault could be?

Simply a computer... possibly a PC, not a MAC.

It does happen!

M.B.Doc I would almost never disagree with you but if its lying about reality it has to be a MAC. ;-) Honestly though, if its a known problem how can it be fixed? Will it have to be sold with a incorrect milage title or is there a way to recall the correct milage?

You would have to purchase a replacement cluster.
On that car the EIS & fuel computer also store mileage, but that info comes from cluster..go figure
