400E leak and starter noise
Getting ready to start work on the 92 400E I picked up. First problems I need to tackle are a leak at the front left of the car {looks like PS fluid?} And a strange loud whinding grinding noise when starting the car. Other than that, the car runs good. Is there anything else I should do/check to start off with I figure fluids/plugs/filter?? O ya the belt is real loose my budy noticed could this be causing the start up problem? Lastly what is the general opinion on seafoaming through the Intake man and a engine flush??
I'd also like to say thanks to the masses out there for there great input on these great cars!!!!! |

What mileage?
First I'll answer your last question. No seafoam or additives. I'd change it and put Mobil-1 15W50 oil in the engine. Filters- ps fluid is special. Trans fluid and filter (drain the tq converter). Yes, you probably have a leaky PS pump. Return hose can be purcahased by the meter. I think the PS pump it's ussually an o-ring or front seal. Can be done, takes a while. MB dealership is probably the best place to get the parts for that. Loose belt? Sounds like a failed belt tensioner. I'd pull the and inspect stuff. Probably could an idler bearing etc. Sicne you just purchased the car- might want to measure the motor mounts- they are probably colapsed. Plugs make sure you use the right plugs(no platniums or resistors)... get them at the dealer $3 each. Starter- you'll have to just pull it and see what is going on.. I've just got one too- should be here on Tuesday. M |
